A demonstration by 100-ish locals in Deiyai region, Papua on Wednesday, 28 August 2019. They demanded justice for the racism case which dishonored some West Papuan students recently. But unfortunately, the mass was infiltrated by armed criminals and turned the peaceful protest into the violent one.

Witnesses saw a separate group of more than 1000 people armed with machetes and arrows attacked security personnel and the protesting civilians.

The armed criminal group brutally attacked Army personnel and stole a number of stored firearms and ammunition. They also attack and hurt any civilians that were in their way.

The armed group then continued the attacks with the stolen firearms, machetes and arrows.

Unfortunately, one soldier died as a result of wounds inflicted by the attackers. Five security personnel including 1 soldier and 4 police officers, were wounded. Some innocent civilians are reported also wounded.

West Papuan authority also confirmed that two civilians died, one as a result of wounds from the armed group’s arrow, and the other died of gunshot wound as a result of the brutal attacked by the armed criminals using the stolen arms. In total 3 people are killed and 16 people are wounded.

Even though outnumbered, security personnel were extremely restrained in their response. Defensive actions were taken to control the armed group including by returning fire. Smoke grenades were used to disperse the crowd.

Indonesian media report the incident and raise national attention to what is developing in West Papua and that the region needs more people to help it advance regardless of the recent bloody incident. Unfortunately some foreign media like Reuters, Al Jazeera and RNZ used this grieving situation to create horrible, media sensation by informing twisted, evidence-less info and news.

At the moment, (per 29 August 2019) it has been confirmed by local authorities and security forces that the situation in Deiyai, West Papua is now calm and has returned to normal.(*)
