First Female Ambassador from Papua Fientje Suebu Inaugurated

President Joko Widodo inaugurated the first female ambassador from Papua, namely Fientje Maritje Suebu, in Jakarta, Wednesday 12 January 2022. Fientje was sworn in as the Indonesian Ambassador to New Zealand and also Samoa, the Kingdom of Tonga, the Cook Islands and Niue.

Besides Fientje, Jokowi also inaugurated Sunarko as the Indonesian Ambassador to the Republic of Sudan. Lt. Gen. TNI (Ret.) Agus Widjojo was also sworn in as Ambassador to the Republic of the Philippines and concurrently to the Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Republic of Palau on that occasion.

“I swear/promise that I will be appointed as ambassador extraordinary and in full power to be loyal to the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia and will carry out all laws and regulations as straight as possible for the sake of my service to the nation and state,” said the three new ambassadors, at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, Wednesday (12/1), as written by CNN Indonesia.

The ambassadors promised to be faithful to all orders and instructions of the central government. They also promised to fulfil all responsibilities while serving in friendly countries.

Fientje is a woman born in Sentani who studied at the Foreign Service School. After graduating, he worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for more than 30 years.

From the Facebook page of the Indonesian Embassy in Wellington, it is explained that Ambassador Fientje Maritje Suebu is a seasoned career diplomat with an experience of more than 35 years in the service. Her tour of duty ranged from Zimbabwe, Belgium, Canada and her last position was as the Deputy Chief of Mission in New Delhi, India. She is married to Mr Philipus Sarwom, a Christian Evangelist, and blessed with three children

In July 2021, the DPR declared Fientje to have passed the fit and proper test as an ambassador.

Fientje replaces Golkar Party politician Tanthowi Yahya. The former well-known presenter had served as the Indonesian Ambassador to New Zealand and concurrently Samoa, the Kingdom of Tonga, the Cook Islands, and Niue since 2017. (*)
